🇩🇪 Germany
Payrails builds payment infrastructure for enterprises that have concluded they need to control their own payment stack rather than rent someone else's. Founded in Berlin by former Delivery Hero payments leaders, it emerged from the experience of running payments at genuine scale across dozens of markets — where the difference between a good and a bad routing decision is measured in millions and where no off-the-shelf platform quite fits.
The platform is modular and configurable, with transaction-level routing and recovery rules as its distinguishing strength. Where many orchestrators let a merchant set provider preferences at a broad level, Payrails is positioned for companies that want rules operating per transaction, and recovery logic that responds to the specific reason an authorisation failed. That is a meaningful distinction for high-volume merchants whose decline patterns vary by issuer, country and card type in ways a coarse routing rule cannot capture.
The target customer is accordingly narrow: large enterprises and platforms with in-house payment expertise, building payment capability as part of their own product rather than buying a finished one. For companies with a payments team that already knows what it wants, the configurability is the point. For companies without one, it is overhead.
