Acquired by Square/Block in 2020; brand shut down across the EU in August 2023
About

Verse was founded in Barcelona in 2015 as Spain's answer to Venmo — a peer-to-peer payments app for splitting bills, pooling money for group gifts and sending cash between friends as easily as sending a text. Led by Bernardo Hernández, previously a Google product manager and director of Flickr, it grew to around one million users and €500 million in transaction volume, held a European payments licence, and expanded into Italy, France and Portugal while competing directly with Bizum, the bank-backed Spanish standard.

That competition is the key to what happened next. In June 2020, Square — later renamed Block — acquired Verse and folded it into the Cash App organisation, saying Verse would continue operating independently as Block's route into European P2P payments. It was a credible plan: Cash App had proven the model in the US, and Europe's P2P market was fragmented across national schemes.

It did not last. In March 2023 the Bank of Lithuania, which provided Verse's banking licence, admonished and fined the company $250,000 over anti-money-laundering deficiencies. In August 2023, Jack Dorsey announced that Block was shutting the Verse brand across the European Union, alongside its Clearpay BNPL operations in Spain, France and Italy — the markets, he said, had not delivered the growth and profitability expected. Pitchbook records a subsequent transaction involving the Verse entity in March 2025.

Verse is retained in this database as a record rather than a recommendation. Its trajectory is a compact lesson in European P2P payments: the reason no pan-European Venmo exists is that each market already has a bank-consortium standard with deeper distribution than any app can buy — Bizum in Spain, BLIK in Poland, Swish in Sweden, Vipps in Norway, Payconiq in Belgium. Verse built a genuinely good product, was acquired by one of the best-resourced payment companies in the world, and still could not out-compete the banks' own scheme in its home market.
